Trézor.io/Start® | Starting™ Up Your® Device | Trézor®

Setting up your Trézor® device is the first step to securing your digital assets with one of the world’s most trusted hardware wallets. Whether you’re brand new to cryptocurrency or an experienced user, this guide will help you safely set up your device using the official Trézor® process. With your Trézor® device, you gain full control of your private keys, keeping your crypto safe from online threats, scams, and hacking attempts.

Begin at Trézor.io/Start®

To get started, you will need to visit the official Trézor® start page. This is where you’ll find everything required to initialize your device. Always ensure you’re using the official Trézor® site to avoid counterfeits or phishing scams. This page will direct you to download the official Trézor® Suite, the application used to manage your wallet, check balances, send or receive cryptocurrency, and access more advanced features.

Connecting Your Device

Once on the start page, connect your Trézor® device to your computer using the provided USB cable. If you are using a Trézor® Model T, you will interact with its touchscreen to confirm actions and set up your wallet. If you’re using a Trézor® One, you will use the physical buttons to navigate through the prompts on your computer screen. The Trézor® Suite will automatically detect your device and begin the setup process.

Installing Firmware

Trézor® devices are shipped without firmware pre-installed to ensure they have not been tampered with before reaching you. When you first connect your device, it will prompt you to install the latest firmware. This step is essential for security and functionality. The Trézor® Suite will guide you through the firmware installation. After the update is complete, your device will reboot and be ready for wallet creation or recovery.

Creating a New Wallet

After installing the firmware, you will be asked whether you want to create a new wallet or recover an existing one. If this is your first time using a Trézor® device, select the option to create a new wallet. Your device will then generate a unique recovery seed phrase. This phrase is made up of either 12 or 24 words and represents the only way to recover your funds if the device is lost, stolen, or damaged.

Writing Down Your Recovery Seed

It is absolutely critical to write down your recovery seed phrase on paper and store it in a secure place. This seed phrase gives complete access to your wallet and assets. Do not store this phrase digitally or take a photo of it. You should never share your seed phrase with anyone, under any circumstances. Losing this phrase means you could permanently lose access to your cryptocurrency. You can enhance your backup’s security by storing the seed in a fireproof or waterproof location, or even using a metal backup device.

Verifying Your Recovery Phrase

To ensure accuracy, Trézor® will ask you to verify your seed phrase by selecting or typing the words in the correct order. This is a built-in safety check to confirm that you have copied it down correctly. Completing this step ensures that, if needed, you will be able to recover your wallet and assets using this phrase alone.

Setting a PIN for Extra Security

Once your wallet is created and your recovery phrase is confirmed, the device will prompt you to set a PIN code. This PIN is required each time you connect your Trézor® to a computer and serves as the first layer of physical protection. Choose a strong PIN that you can remember but is not easy for others to guess. You can always change your PIN later within the Trézor® Suite if needed.

Managing Your Assets with Trézor® Suite

With your wallet fully set up, you can now access the Trézor® Suite. This is the main platform for viewing and managing your crypto portfolio. Through the Suite, you can send and receive funds, view transaction history, add new accounts, and access advanced settings such as labeling, coin control, or using a passphrase. The Trézor® Suite supports a wide range of cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, ERC-20 tokens, and many more.

Best Practices for Ongoing Security

To keep your digital assets secure, always keep your device firmware up to date. Trézor® frequently releases updates that include security patches, interface improvements, and support for additional cryptocurrencies. Keep your recovery seed safe and offline, and avoid entering it anywhere other than directly on your device when prompted. For advanced users, consider enabling passphrase protection for added layers of security.

Welcome to Self-Custody with Trézor®

Now that your Trézor® is set up, you have taken a critical step toward owning your financial freedom. With Trézor®, your private keys stay with you — offline and secure. You are no longer reliant on exchanges or third-party wallets. Trézor® is more than just a device; it’s a philosophy of self-custody, privacy, and security.
